TRENGGALEK at a glance


Trenggalek regency is located between 111˚24’ and 112˚11’ east longitude and 75˚3’ and 8˚34’south latitude. Trenggalek borders on Tulungagung in the north and in the east, Indian Ocean on the south, and Ponorogo and Pacitan on the west. Trenggalek is 180 km away from the capital city of East Java, Surabaya and it takes about 5 hours by public transportation. This regency has 1.205,22 square kilometers width and inhabited by more or less 800.000 people. Tenggalek regency has 14 districts, 152 villages and 5 subdistricts. The inhabitants of Trenggalek are dominated by farmer, fishermen, private officer, and state official officer, teacher, and some other people are working abroad either in formal and informal job area.
The commodity of Trenggalek regency is agriculture consisting of rice, corn, cassava, soybean, and peanut. Besides, there is plantation consisting of sugar cane, clove, tobacco, durian, zalacca, mangos teen, rambutan, coffee, cocoa, coconut, banana and lanseh tree. THE HISTORY of TRENGGALEK


Trenggalek people who became the origin of Trenggalek residents, began since prehistoric era, since the stone age  about 10,000 years BC. Originally the community lived in small and independent groups. Then more migrants were come. Then, began to live in a larger group, which gave birth of the village. Then started living in large groups that lived side by side with an orderly order in society.
They didn’t know the letters because it was still prehistoric era. They weren’t recognizable by the existenced of a written stone, but from the presenced of signs in a place, with the existenced of a marker of life in the form of artifacts and others. It was characterized by the stone relics of tools of domestic life, hunting tools, farming and etc.
The prehistoric era ended with the entry of  Hinduism and Buddhism. They taught about the Deity, the Godhead in accordance with the concept of the Deity of Hinduism and Buddhism. Hinduism also taught letters for literacy. Then came the inscriptions, inscriptions of stone written and others.
The pre-historic era ended, and began the era of history. At the same time the village has started to grow. Started with the royal order. Next came the Hindu kingdoms such as Tarumanegara, Kalingga, Mataram (Hindu), Kahuripan, Doho / Kadhiri, singosari, tumapel, panjalu, majapahit, and etc. These kingdoms were alternately supervised Trenggalek.

      1.    Prigi Beach

1.       The Traditional Ceremony of Larung Sembonyo

Prigi Beach Watulimo is the one of tourism assets in Trenggalek Regency, besides presenting the charming natural scenery there are also annual events that need to be witnessed. The Origin of Sembonyo

Larung Sembonyo is getting inspiration from Prigi legend about Tumenggung Yudhonegoro. The Prigi society believes he has the real name of Raden Kromodipo, a chief soldier of the Mataram Kingdom. Once, said the legend, Yudhonegoro received orders from Duke of Andong Biru. Andong Biru is the Royal Mataram aristocracy who received the king's mandate as a ruler of forest areas on the coast of Java, ranging from Pacitan to Banyuwangi. Mataram who was ambitious to expand the area, heavily open new areas. Then Andong Biru ordered Yudhonegoro to open Prigi area which was still a jungle, becoming a populated area.
Andong Biru lure Yudhonegoro, later if he successfully opened Prigi area, he is entitled to marry his beloved daughter, Gambar Inten. Yudhonegoro didn’t disappoint. Prigi  become uninhabited areas. The power of Mataram widened. Andong Biru also fulfilled his vow to Yudhonegoro. As an expression of joy, Andong Biru held a massive wedding party Yudhonegoro-Gambar Inten. The party takes place on Monday Kliwon, Selo month on Javanese calendar. In the midst of his happiness to marry a beautiful princess Gambar Inten, Yudhonegoro not forget themselves. He is grateful. Thanks to the support of the ruler of the sea, Prigi is no longer a wilderness, Gambar Inten also belongs to him. For this reason, Yudhonegoro did the sea alms by slashing the monkeys into the sea of ​​Prigi beach.
This tradition is maintained by Prigi society. Only, in its development, LarungSembonyo no longer falls on Monday Kliwon, but Sunday Kliwon. Prigi society maintains Kliwon (market day according to Javanese calendar). A practical reason for a Sunday holiday so travelers have free time to follow LarungSembonyo. 2.    Tradisi Longkangan


Longkangan is a traditional ceremony of Munjungan society and fisherman. The ceremony is held as an expression of gratitude to God over the abundance of catches of the sea. The belief of  Munjungan society that the Tayub Dance is a tribute to the ancestral spirits, as well as one of the embodiments of the ancestral spirits.

1.    Nasi Goreng Anglo

Anglo is a typical fried rice from Trenggalek that usually called mawut rice. When you viewed and compared with fried rice in general this is very different.
